Busy Weekend

August 11, 2014 by Nikki 9 Comments

Busy Weekend | NCsquared Life

My best friend got married on Saturday and I was a bridesmaid, so I had a very busy weekend. On Friday, all the bridesmaids met up for wine and mani/pedis in the afternoon and then the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner were later that night. Saturday was the wedding, so it was full of preparation and celebration with lots of love, good food, and plenty of wine! The wedding was absolutely beautiful, despite the rain we got, and my friends are now relaxing on a white, sandy beach in Mexico as huband and wife. And I couldn’t be happier for them!

On Sunday, we went for brunch with another friend. She’s moving across the country for school at the end of the month so we wanted to spend a little time with her before she leaves. We had a wonderful meal at Watt’s Grocery, a delicious little Durham favorite that prides itself on offering classic favorites and Carolina tradition with local and seasonal goods.

I absolutely love the mural on the side of the building; it’s so beautiful!

The drizzly weather that morning meant my adorable trench was calling my name! I got this skirt in my latest Stitch Fix box, and it was the only item I kept because nothing else fit. I’m loving the pattern and the colors in it because it’s different from anything I probably would’ve picked out for myself. I’ve also been trying to figure out how to wear these shooties/booties in the summer because they’re slightly outside of my comfort zone. What do you all think; do these shoes go with this sweater/skirt combo?

Rainy Weekend

Rainy Weekend | NCsquared Life

What do you wear when it rains all weekend so the only time you leave your house is to go to the grocery store? Well, I wear a comfortable summer sweater with rolled denim, canvas shoes, and a messy bun. I switched the canvas shoes for the rubber rain boots when I took the dogs for a walk but, luckily, it had stopped raining for a spell when I went to the store so I could wear the canvas shoes. And to look at least somewhat put together, I added earrings and these necklaces but no make up because let’s not get crazy.

Sweaters in the Summer

Sweaters in the Summer | NCsquared Life

If you follow us on Instagram, you’ve probably already seen a little peek of this outfit. It seems a little silly to wear sweaters in the summer, but the office where I work as a graduate research assistant loves to keep the temperature approximately arctic so sweaters are necessary. I won’t lie, I kind of like it. The only downside is you have to walk outside in the heat to get inside to the chill, but those few minutes are worth it.

I had trouble deciding if I wanted to wear the belt or not. Ultimately, I went with it but I started out without it. You can see in the photos below that it’s missing. What do you think, belt or no belt?

Here’s the fun one: This was just a test picture so I could get the lightening right (or, at least, as close as possible) and just as the camera snapped, my neighbor jogged by and made me laugh. It’s a cute photo so you get to enjoy it, too.

Classy Neutrals

Classy Neutrals | NCsquared Life

For the rest of the summer, I’ll be spending my Mondays at the pediatric clinic for my internship. I wanted to look legit, so this is what I wore on my first day there. It was really chilly in the morning so the sweater was perfect. And I went with neutrals because they’re just so classy. At the clinic, I was briefly mistaken for an interpreter, which is cool because I do speak Spanish, although not as well as I used to, so I probably can’t really interpret as much as awkwardly communicate in present tense. I also wore flats because I figured I would be on my feet most of the day so I wanted to be comfortable.

This bag is great because it fits my laptop, notebook, text book, AND planner without being too bulky. It also has a removeable cross-body strap, which is really convenient when I’m carrying all that stuff in it and my shoulder feels like it’s going to fall off from all the weight. That happens a lot. I actually carry A LOT of bags when I’m at school and my friends jokingly call me the bag lady. I usually have my book bag, my purse, an extra bag to carry the stuff that wouldn’t fit in my book bag, and my lunch bag. Life is hard, y’all.

Casual Snow Day

January 30, 2014 by Nikki 1 Comment

Casual Snow Day | NCsquared Life

I get very excited when it snows. I have visions of building snow people, sledding, and starting snowball fights with the neighborhood kids. The reality is that I walk around for a while until my toes get cold, and then I go inside and have mug of hot cocoa and watch TV. Last night I had plans of taking pretty snow pictures with my new camera; needless to say none of these things actually happened today!

I used the colors in my rain boots as inspiration for this outfit. When it’s cold out, I automatically think of this thick cable knit sweater because it’s really warm. I also purchased this knit infinity scarf recently and figured pairing the two would keep me toasty, and I was right. Plus, the colors are in the boots!

I needed a completer piece that would tie it all together but keep it comfy and casual. The majority of my blazers are too formal so I went with my denim jacket. I was a little worried that I wouldn’t be warm enough with just a sweater and jacket, but surprisingly, it was! I tested it by taking Mia for a walk, and trust me, she takes her sweet time. Then we took some photos and played around in the back yard. Only my toes got cold! Rain boots aren’t insulated and my socks weren’t thick enough, but they kept my feet dry and that’s good enough for me!
