Compliments from Budding Fashionistas

Black + White Chevron | NCsquared Life

This is a new top that Nick picked out and it’s already gotten a lot of wear. He has great taste, doesn’t he? I wore this outfit to one of my last clinic days where a 14-year-oldish patient came up to me to tell me how much she loved my shoes. I could tell that she was a budding fasionista herself because she was wearing a cute little top half-tucked into skinny jeans, and lace oxfords. When I told her that I found these shoes on sale for $13 at Old Navy, her eyes lit up. I’m pretty sure I know where she went right after her appointment! I wish I could have taken a photo with her, but that probably wasn’t allowed. She definitely made my day, and I hope she found a pair of green heeled sandals of her own.

I wore this outfit again last week for my internship final evaluation presentation, where I was complimented again by the field placement director on being well-dressed and appropriate for the work place. So, I would definitely say this outfit is a win; it makes me feel great each time I wear it.

I was afraid that the statement necklace wouldn’t make much of a statement, and I can tell from these photos that I was right. It did get lost in the chevron pattern but I tried several different necklaces with the same effect. Next time I might go with a simple pearl necklace or a solid scarf instead.

Classy Neutrals

Classy Neutrals | NCsquared Life

For the rest of the summer, I’ll be spending my Mondays at the pediatric clinic for my internship. I wanted to look legit, so this is what I wore on my first day there. It was really chilly in the morning so the sweater was perfect. And I went with neutrals because they’re just so classy. At the clinic, I was briefly mistaken for an interpreter, which is cool because I do speak Spanish, although not as well as I used to, so I probably can’t really interpret as much as awkwardly communicate in present tense. I also wore flats because I figured I would be on my feet most of the day so I wanted to be comfortable.

This bag is great because it fits my laptop, notebook, text book, AND planner without being too bulky. It also has a removeable cross-body strap, which is really convenient when I’m carrying all that stuff in it and my shoulder feels like it’s going to fall off from all the weight. That happens a lot. I actually carry A LOT of bags when I’m at school and my friends jokingly call me the bag lady. I usually have my book bag, my purse, an extra bag to carry the stuff that wouldn’t fit in my book bag, and my lunch bag. Life is hard, y’all.

Navy, Crazy Check, and Cognac

April 8, 2014 by Nikki 4 Comments

Navy, Crazy Check, and Cognac | NCsquared Life

I love these crazy pants. They’re technically a black and white checked pattern, but they look great with this navy blouse. Wasn’t it a thing at one time that you weren’t supposed to wear navy and black together? Well, I’m throwing that rule to the wind and wearing whatever I want!

I wore this outfit to a meeting with a professor to discuss a possible internship. It must have been on point because it turns out she can take me on, which means I finally have an internship! And I’ll actually get to graduate! I was seriously getting concerned about that because other avenues I’d pursued weren’t working out. So my advice: if you’re going on an interview then you should wear navy, crazy check pants, and cognac and you’re guaranteed to get it. Ok, of course I’m just kidding and can’t really guarantee that but maybe it’s worth a try?

Foundation Pieces

January 16, 2014 by Nikki 7 Comments

foundation pieces | NCsquared Life

Official outfit #2.

I started the 30 for 30 Challenge because I was feeling a serious lack of creativity and wanted a reason to love the pieces in my closet again – without feeling the constant need to go shopping. The original rule of the challenge is to create 30 outfits using the 30 pieces, but I found that some of the items I chose are rather plain and that some of the outfits needed a little extra umph to make me truly enjoy wearing them. Based on this observation, I’ve decided to use the 30 pieces as “foundation pieces” and go from there. The result: this outfit! The top, pants, and shoes are on the list. When trying to figure out the best way to complete it, however, I felt all the cardigans and blazers in my list were too boring. When I paired with this blazer (which is new and therefore not in the list) I loved the outcome. It’s definitely a winner.

The stripes on the blazer and shoes are the same color (navy).

Crazy Pants

October 16, 2013 by Nikki No Comments
denim jacket, gingham Mad Men pants, green sweater | NCsquared Life

There was supposed to be sunshine today, which would have made my photos look much better, but c’est la vie. Instead, you get crazy pants photos! They’re a plaid/gingham pattern (I’m still learning the difference between the two) and were part of the Spring Mad Men collection at Banana Republic. Since I’m wearing this ensemble to class (and because it’s still a little chilly outside from no sun light!), I decided to dress it down a bit by pairing it with the denim jacket.

The shirt looks blueish but it’s actually a soft kelly green, so I added a green bag to go with the soft green of the shirt; keeping it all in the same color pallet.

Here’s the nice detail of the pants. See, they’re not too crazy. But seriously, don’t stare at this photo too long because it might hurt your eyes!

Close up of the necklace. I LOVE this thing. I get the most complements on it. Apologies, again, for the lighting. This necklace is a slightly darker gray in person. But still beautiful!

What’s the craziest thing in your closet? How often do you wear it?
