Winter Maxi

March 4, 2014 by Nikki 13 Comments

DSC_1640

What do you do when it’s sort of warm and sunny but there’s still a chilly breeze? Well, I wear a maxi skirt with ankle boots and a huge knit scarf. I’ve only recently started wearing maxi skirts and maxi dresses because I’m  so short and was afraid they wouldn’t fit or they would make me look even shorter. But, as it turns out, they’re pretty awesome even for the shorties like me (especially when they come in petite sizes!). In my opinion, maxi skirts are one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing you can wear and fun prints make them even better. I’m surprised I don’t have more.

Oh, hi there.  Did I just pull my hair up and make the sun shine brighter? Why, yes I did! In full disclosure, I took the first few photos myself with my tripod and the self-timer – apparently, they don’t make a remote for my camera yet – and, as you can probably see, they turned out a little blurry. I just happened to be wearing this outfit again (because it’s so comfortable) so I made Nick snap a few more, brighter photos. I hope that’s not too weird.

And here’s the fun one: I’m twirling!

Put a Flower On It

I’ve already said you can’t go wrong with neutrals, so of course I did it again. But this time, I took it a step further and added a pop of color with this fabric flower clip/hair elastic and my yellow clutch. I bought the flower to wear in my hair for a wedding but it works with everything. I put it in my hair, pin it to my shirts and blazers, and I’ve even pinned it to my handbags.

The button-front top has gray stripes, to give it a little more interest.  I wore this outfit to class and was a total cutie the whole time.

From The Back of My Closet

February 6, 2014 by Nikki 2 Comments

Turquoise pants and fuchsia scarf | NCsquared Life

I pulled these pants out from the back of my closet. I think I’ve only worn them twice because the color scares me and I don’t know why. They’re not that much brighter than regular denim pants and yet when I put them on, I feel like they’re screaming. I don’t particularly like wearing “Crayola”  outfits, meaning any one bright color with another bright color. I shy away from wearing primary colors together because then there’s just too much color for  me.

Therefore, I have a hard time figuring out what to wear with these pants and that’s why they ended up in the back of the closet. I do like the look of the black sweater with them but I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone (but not too much) so I added the bright fuchsia scarf. I like the balance of the black between the two brighter colors, so it works.

Weird fact about me: I hate carrying purses so I never change them out from outfit to outfit. I rarely change them out at all. The most I do is throw a few important things in a clutch when I feel like adding a pop of color or don’t feel like carrying the big purse. If I were the type to change out my purse, I would have a bunch of them (I only have, like, 3) and I would be carrying a pink or black one with this outfit. But I’m not so I don’t. I love this purse (all things considered) so I just carry it.

And here’s the fun one! I can stretch in these pants if I need to run from something.

A Pop of Yellow

Yep, same pants again today. Since yesterday was a snow day, we didn’t leave the house meaning I can wear these pants again. Okay, let’s be real, even if I did leave and people saw me, I’d still rewear them. At least it cuts down on laundry.

I find that I’m drawn to neutrals so I wanted to give this outfit a pop of color.  I purchased this clutch from Etsy as a wedding gift to myself and then purchased five more (in varying colors and patterns) as bridesmaids’ gifts for my wedding party. They don’t hold much, and I wish there was small pocket on the inside, but I love it just the same. I picked this one out specifically because I thought it would give my outfits a bright pop of color, and I was right.

I also think fuchsia or hot pink would look really good with these rock gray pants; maybe that will be my next purchase. I almost didn’t get these pants because I wasn’t sure I would be able to wear them with much, but I’ve come up with so many outfits in my mind with them that I’ve had to write them all down so I could create them without leaving any out!

Black and Blue

Black and Blue | NCsquared Life

The weather briefly warmed up a bit and I could wear this cute skirt and thin tights without freezing my tooshie off.  Nick picked out the skirt because he has awesome taste and I know he would want me to let you know that. My favorite thing about it is the bow in the front. When I tuck my shirt into skirts, it sometimes feels too plain, like a belt is needed as a completer piece.  But this bow adds that little something extra and makes the skirt even more cute.

I wore this to have coffee and talk wedding shop with my best friend who is getting married this summer, which is so exciting! Then I wore it to dinner for Nick’s mom’s birthday. I’ve been trying to find more pieces that can be dressed up or down and this skirt is perfect for that.

I love the way the wedge ankle boots look with this outfit, but I decided to change into heels for dinner. The heels are more dressy than the boots, which is what I wanted in a dinner look. I would also wear the heels in the office for a more professional look.
