Vacation Vibes

July 3, 2020 by Nikki No Comments

We still have about two months before our actual family vacation, which is a beach trip scheduled for the end of August, but when I got dressed this morning for the start of our three-day weekend, I was definitely feeling those vacation vibes. Especially from this outfit!

Tank: Loft Outlet | Shorts & Espadrilles: Old Navy | Kimono: Spiritual Gangster via FabFitFun | Sunnies: Target

I’m not a brave pattern mixer, but I’m really digging the kimono + espadrille look and these are the only ones I had so I put them together and rolled with it. I think it looks pretty good, especially once you add the hat (bottom photo). We don’t have a whole lot planned this 4th of July, since everything is closed or cancelled, so we’ll probably just grill some hamburgers and hot dogs and play in the awesome inflatable pool we picked up for Sebastian. We’ll also be finishing up our packing since the move to our new house happens early next week. I’ll probably live in this outfit all weekend and I’m really okay with that!

WFHW: Culottes

July 2, 2020 by Nikki No Comments

Here’s the next outfit in my Work From Home Wardrobe Series where I display the cute outfits I’m wearing while working from home during the coronavirus pandemic.

I remember wearing cheap cotton culottes/gauchos in undergrad. They were comfortable, like pajamas, and easy to style so wearing them to class was a no-brainer. I like no-brainers! While culottes are nice, much like midi skirts, they’re very hard for a short girl like me to pull off. But I decided to give these a try because they came sized in petite, which means they should have a shorter inseam. I asked Nick if I should get them hemmed and he said, no. I thought they looked just a tad too long in the photos (and my mirror, apparently), but when I saw my reflection in another mirror, they looked pretty good.

Blouse: Loft (old) | Culottes: Loft (new) | Heels: H&M | Espadrilles: Old Navy

I think they look best with heels because the heels help to elongate my legs a bit, as you can see from the first two photos. But they also look pretty cute with my cute espadrilles or gold slides.

When I first pulled these pants out of the shipping bag and tried them on, I thought the legs were a bit too wide. But after reading about the design aesthetic of culottes and learning that they are supposed to have a full cut to resemble a skirt, I realize that do look really good. I’m definitely starting to get a little more bold in my style choices. There was a time not long ago that I would have put these on and thought I looked dumpy and sent them back. But I like them so I’m letting go of any self-conscious worries I might have and embracing what I like. And man does it feel good!

What do you think of culottes? Would you ever wear them?

WFHW: Floral Tank

July 1, 2020 by Nikki No Comments

Here’s the next outfit in my Work From Home Wardrobe Series where I display the cute outfits I’m wearing while working from home during the coronavirus pandemic.

I told myself at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown that with our upcoming move that I should hold off on purchasing things so we could save some money and have less to pack and move BUT I kind of decided I wanted to purchase a few more things to round out my spring and summer wardrobe. So I bought this floral tank and some cute wide-leg cropped culottes from Loft and a pair of shoes from Old Navy to go with them. That outfit will make it’s debut a little later on the blog but I loved this flora tank so much that I wanted to wear it right away. So I did. Because apparently I just do whatever I want 😀

Tank: Loft | Cardigan, Pants, and Sandals: Old Navy

Once upon a time, I hated these thin-strapped tanks because I didn’t like wearing strapless bras and I hated when my bra strap was visible. I’ve definitely gotten over both of those things and will wear my tanks all the time. And I’m glad I did get over it because look at how cute this outfit is without the tank. Plus, it’s already too hot out there for sleeves!

Well, dear readers, this will likely be the last week you see all of my backgrounds that you’ve come to know from my account because it’s the last week in our house before the move. Soon, you’ll see a new background. I’m not even sure what it will be yet so we’ll discover it together.

WFHW: Crisp Summer Whites

June 29, 2020 by Nikki No Comments

Here’s the next outfit in my Work From Home Wardrobe Series where I display the cute outfits I’m wearing while working from home during the coronavirus pandemic.

Sweater: Banana Republic (old) | Jeans: Loft | Sunnies: Target | Slide: Loft Outlet

Y’all, if you thought your office was cold then you’ve clearly never worked in the same room as my husband! I don’t know why or how but our home office is just as frigid as the ones I used to go to before the pandemic. When we first started working from home, Nick set up in the dining room and was taking up half of the dining room table (which made meal times a pain) and I was using the teeny little desk in our office.  At the beginning of the month when it became clear that our offices were remaining closed through the rest of the summer, we decided to share the home office. We got slightly bigger desks and set up in the same room. AND it’s really interesting because our A/C remains at its usual setting but for some reason, I get frozen over now that we share a space. I’m always wearing sweaters, socks, blankets, etc. to stay warm.

I’m no stranger to wearing sweaters in the summer, often because of those frigid office temps but I didn’t expect that in my own home! Anyway, I got this sweater from Banana Republic SO MANY years ago and it has proven to be a true closet staple because I continue to wear it year after year. There were a few times when I thought I might donate it but I held on to it, and for good reason. It goes with everything. Literally, everything.

Anyway, let me get back to work before my fingers freeze to the keyboard!

What do you think of these crisp summer whites?

Recreating an Outfit #4: Neutrals

June 24, 2020 by Nikki No Comments

Some outfits are instant classics that can–and should–be worn over and over again. That’s what I’m sharing with you all today: a classic outfit I wore about five years ago that looks just as good, if not better, with a few little updates. While color is fun, I’ve never been afraid of neutrals or beige; in fact, I’m drawn to their simple, classic appearance. That’s one of the reasons I like this outfit so much! Recreating this outfit was a no-brainer when I realized that I had all of the necessary pieces in my closet.

Old outfit originally worn on May 18, 2015:

Top & Cardigan: Target | Jeans & Flats: Old Navy | Hat & Necklace: Banana Republic | Sunnies: Target

I wore the original outfit to the farmers’ market and to run some errands. I no longer have these jeans or top because I traded them both in for an upgrade. What’s really funny is that I remember feeling like this shirt was “too boho” for me so I didn’t wear it very much. It was a really nice top but I think the crochet floral top in the photo below is way more of my style.

Today’s outfit: June 24, 2020

Nikki by example | www.nikkibyexample.com

Top: C. luce via Stitch Fix | Cardigan: Target | Jeans: Just Black via Stitch Fix | Hat: Banana Republic | Shoes: H&M

My new distressed denim fits so much better (the ON pair were too big and long while these are petite sized) and the crocheted top, in my opinion, has a more grown up elegance to it. And swapping out the flats for heels gives this outfit a fresh, modern feel. I didn’t really have anywhere to wear this new updated version so I just wore it while I was working from home. It’ll definitely be on the menu once things open back up and we venture out to more places.

What do you think of this update?
