Recreating an Outfit #4: Neutrals

June 24, 2020 by Nikki No Comments

Some outfits are instant classics that can–and should–be worn over and over again. That’s what I’m sharing with you all today: a classic outfit I wore about five years ago that looks just as good, if not better, with a few little updates. While color is fun, I’ve never been afraid of neutrals or beige; in fact, I’m drawn to their simple, classic appearance. That’s one of the reasons I like this outfit so much! Recreating this outfit was a no-brainer when I realized that I had all of the necessary pieces in my closet.

Old outfit originally worn on May 18, 2015:

I wore the original outfit to the farmers’ market and to run some errands. I no longer have these jeans or top because I traded them both in for an upgrade. What’s really funny is that I remember feeling like this shirt was “too boho” for me so I didn’t wear it very much. It was a really nice top but I think the crochet floral top in the photo below is way more of my style.

Today’s outfit: June 24, 2020

Top: C. luce via Stitch Fix | Cardigan: Target | Jeans: Just Black via Stitch Fix | Hat: Banana Republic | Shoes: H&M

My new distressed denim fits so much better (the ON pair were too big and long while these are petite sized) and the crocheted top, in my opinion, has a more grown up elegance to it. And swapping out the flats for heels gives this outfit a fresh, modern feel. I didn’t really have anywhere to wear this new updated version so I just wore it while I was working from home. It’ll definitely be on the menu once things open back up and we venture out to more places.

What do you think of this update?

Drawn to Neutrals

Drawn to Neutrals | NCsquared Life

I’ve been thinking a lot about my style lately because I have a closet full of clothes that I haven’t worn in a while. As I reassess, I’m finding that I’m drawn more and more to neutral colors, especially white, with maybe a splash of color in the form of an accessory or blazer/jacket. I’ve never really been into wearing a lot of bright colors or patterns togethers for fear of looking like a crayon box (some folks pull it off very well, but I don’t feel that I am one of them) so I usually steer clear. I chose this tank with geometric patterns etched in to give the outfit a little more interest, and the hat is super cute, too.

Also, this is about as boho as you’ll see me get. I even wore this outfit to the farmers’ market last week.

Classy Neutrals

Classy Neutrals | NCsquared Life

For the rest of the summer, I’ll be spending my Mondays at the pediatric clinic for my internship. I wanted to look legit, so this is what I wore on my first day there. It was really chilly in the morning so the sweater was perfect. And I went with neutrals because they’re just so classy. At the clinic, I was briefly mistaken for an interpreter, which is cool because I do speak Spanish, although not as well as I used to, so I probably can’t really interpret as much as awkwardly communicate in present tense. I also wore flats because I figured I would be on my feet most of the day so I wanted to be comfortable.

This bag is great because it fits my laptop, notebook, text book, AND planner without being too bulky. It also has a removeable cross-body strap, which is really convenient when I’m carrying all that stuff in it and my shoulder feels like it’s going to fall off from all the weight. That happens a lot. I actually carry A LOT of bags when I’m at school and my friends jokingly call me the bag lady. I usually have my book bag, my purse, an extra bag to carry the stuff that wouldn’t fit in my book bag, and my lunch bag. Life is hard, y’all.

Can’t Go Wrong With Neutrals

Can't Go Wrong With Neutrals | NCsquared Life

Outfit #4 for the 30 for 30 Challenge. These are coming along quite nicely now that I’ve given the rules a little breathing room.

I wore this to a meeting at school about our internship requirements. The bad news is I was in a car for three hours because I had to drive to campus and back but the good news is they gave us free lunch.  I had planned to wear a black pencil skirt but decided to go with the crop pants because it was a little chilly out this morning. The plaid blazer was a good choice because it added some interest, but I could have incorporated some more color. Although, you clearly can’t go wrong with neutrals!

I really like wearing crop pants, which can be a bit tricky when you’re as short as I am (5’1”) because you run the risk of them being too long and then they’re not cropped, they’re just cut off below the ankle. I stick to petite sizes because they’re prefect for us shorties, and that’s what I recommend. Otherwise you can get them hemmed.

Since Nick has become my photographer, my photo shoots have gotten much more fun! He makes me laugh a lot. It’s a quality I love about him, a good quality to have.

WFHW: Cozy Business Casual

November 12, 2020 by Nikki No Comments

Here’s the next outfit in my Work-From-Home Wardrobe Series where I display the cute outfits I’m wearing while working from home during the coronavirus pandemic.

Please excuse the distractions on my shelf in this photo but I got some really good lighting by placing the mirror in this position! I’ve been slacking when it comes to getting dressed up for work, but I’m getting back on the ball with it. The desk in my home office sits right beneath the air vent and with the NC weather so warm the last few days, we’ve had the A/C turned on so I’ve been colder than usual during the day. Hence the cute sweater.

Blouse, sweater, and trousers: Banana Republic (all old) | Flats: Target (old)

This outfit is perfect for the office, home office, or any occasion where you need a simple business casual outfit. I love wearing all neutrals and then adding a little bit of interest with the leopard print flats. Those are just for show, though, because I’m not going anywhere and spend most of my time barefoot, which I also love. Oh, and I got a haircut. It was feeling way too long before, but this length and bob/lob style is my favorite. Overall, I’m feeling pretty good!
