It’s that time of year again! 2011 is slowly coming to a close. Christmas (for those who celebrate) is this weekend and Hanukkah (for those who celebrate) has just begun. And Kwanzaa (again, for those who celebrate) is next week. Then there’s my personal favorite, the winter solstice! The new year is right around the corner and we’re all probably thinking about our New Year’s Resolution. Okay, maybe not all of us, but I’ve been thinking about mine. Like most people, every year I make a resolution about some big life change that I’m adamant about, like saving money or eating better, and I swear that I’m going to stick to it come hell or high water and then by January 14, it’s already forgotten. But this year, I’ve come up with something pretty good. And it’s so good that I’m actually really excited about it and have plans to start it early.
Today I’m thankful that we were able to get a real frazier fir Christmas tree this year. I haven’t had a real tree since I lived at home, which was almost 10 years ago. I’m also equally grateful that we purchased our tree from TROSA, a substance abuse recovery program. I’m happy to contributes funds to their programs because I think they help give a lot of people second chances, and there’s really nothing better than that.
So we got the tree home and decorated it, and it looks awesome. We were able to retire the artificial tree I’ve been using for the past three or four years. It’s pretty small and scraggly so we lovingly nicknamed it the Charlie Brown tree. Our real tree smells fresh and wintery and it’s much bigger so we had to buy a few extra ornaments. But it looks beautiful and fits perfectly and I’m excited to have it up for the next month. Definitely makes the holidays feel warm and cozy in our new house. For that, I’m thankful.
Welcome to Nikki by example!
I chose this name for my personal life and style blog as a play on the phrase “leading by example.” I believe it’s really important to lead by example the values and actions I want to embody in this life. I also felt it would reflect that my writing, my outfits, my life hacks and stories, etc. are me living my most authentic life. And in that same vein, I hope it inspires me to get out there, do more things, to take more chances, and to truly lead by example.
Other cool facts about me include: I have a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with a concentration in health behavior, a B.A. in Psychology, and a minor in Spanish. I live, work, and play in Durham, NC. Among many other things, I’m a wife, a mother, a furbaby mommy, a sushi eater, a coffee drinker, a wine lover, a dancer, and a writer.
