Chvrches – “Recover”

June 5, 2014 by Nick No Comments

An earworm is a snippet of a song that gets stuck in your head and repeats over and over.  Over 90 percent of people suffer from this debilitating condition at least once a week.  Studies have shown that one possible cause is our mind’s being in a “low attention state”, which explains why I always get an earworm when I’m walking Mia in the morning.  I’ll be sharing these Morning Earworms with you every morning (that I remember to) because misery loves company.  Enjoy!

Chvrches is a synthpop trio hailing from Scotland.  I actually just found them a couple months ago and quickly became a fan.  Sadly I missed getting tickets to their recent show in Raleigh, le sigh.  If you haven’t heard it on the radio already I also recommend “The Mother We Share”.

Fitz and the Tantrums – “6 AM”

Fitz and the Tantrums are a neo soul band from Los Angeles who’s really jumped into the spotlight the last couple years.  The front duo of Michael Fitzpatrick and Noelle Scaggs have a great chemistry, especially on stage.  Nikki and I went to see them recently at Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh.  They played “6 AM” from their recent sophomore album More Than Just a Dream. It’s not my favorite song of theirs –  that would be “MoneyGrabber” – but “6 AM” is one of those songs that anybody who has experienced heartbreak can identify with, without it being totally depressing.

Katy B – “Witches Brew”

Katy B is a British singer/songwriter who got her start as a featured singer on numerous dubstep, UK garage and house style songs.  I found her a couple years ago singing on Magnetic Man’s “Perfect Stranger” and shortly thereafter became hooked on her first single “Katy on a Mission”.  I added her to a couple of my Pandora stations where songs from her first album On a Mission are frequently played.  I’ve always dug electronic/techno music with female lead vocals and Katy B has become one of my favorites for more bass heavy dance tunes.

Let there be light: DIY light fixture project

February 10, 2013 by Nick No Comments

While shopping at Home Goods for some side tables, we came across what we thought was a cute little floral glass light shade.  Unfortunately it was just a candle holder, but I figured with a little ingenuity I’d be able to modernize it and make an electric fixture out of it.  We decided we would use it in the laundry room since it was a small room and only a single light bulb would fit into the shade.

Light shade before I started cutting it apart.

I heart food: Magnolia Grill

March 10, 2011 by Nick 1 Comment

As a housewarming gift our awesome Realtors gave us a gift certificate to Magnolia Grill, a converted grocery store on the corner of 9th and Knox streets in the heart of Durham.  After heading over on a Monday only to find they were closed, we were finally able to make use of our gift last Tuesday.

Upon entering the place is very unassuming with simple tables and chairs set up with a main dining room to the right and a raised bar area to the left.  Behind the dining room is what looks like a more private reserved room and behind the bar is an open view of the kitchen.  We sat closest to the kitchen in the bar area and had a great view of seeing the final prep of all the dishes being served.
