Winter Solstice 2020

December 21, 2020 by Nikki No Comments

Hi, everyone! It’s time for the yearly winter solstice post! *This post was originally published on 12/21/2013 but is being reposted below with a few updates*

No matter what our spiritual beliefs, or what part of the world we live in, we all share the turning of the sun on the solstices. Today is Winter Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere, or as it’s more commonly known, the first day of winter.

The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day of the year and the longest night, the beginning of winter when the earth is tilted the furthest from the sun. But it also marks the return of the sun. After this night, the days will begin to get longer and we’ll have the opportunity for a new beginning. The Winter Solstice has been celebrated since ancient times by various groups of people, and many of these celebrations have become linked to a variety of religious practices. Many of the Christian traditions around Christmas, for example, have been adapted from those traditional practiced by these people groups.

The Winter Solstice is a natural time for letting go and saying farewell. It’s the perfect time to release your resentments and regrets into the darkness, knowing they will be transformed with the return of the light. Renew your visions for the new year and remember that it is important not to judge yourself by “success” or “failure” in this past year but by the true quality of how you lived your life and whether you were a good influence on your world.

Birthdays are a Reason to Celebrate

December 10, 2018 by Nikki No Comments

I love birthdays.

Mine and everyone else’s. For me, celebrating a birthday is honoring the day that a person came to be, a whole human being that came into existence from seemingly nowhere, and you just can’t beat that.

But when I turned 30, I briefly considered no longer commemorating my birthday because turning 30 meant I was getting older and getting much closer to having to face my own mortality. I hated the thought of dying, as evidenced by the huge dose of health anxiety, previously known as hypochondria, I felt on a regular basis since my late 20s, so anything that reminded me I was getting closer to death had to go. Little did I know that death was closer to knocking at my door than I ever realized.

Día de los Muertos | Day of the Dead

November 1, 2018 by Nikki No Comments

This post was originally published on November 1, 2016 and has been slightly updated.

Feliz Día de los Muertos!

Today is Day of the Dead, a two-day holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and by people of Mexican ancestry, and it focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for, remember, and help support dead loved ones on their spiritual journey. On this day, people go to cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed and build private altars with the favorite foods and beverages, as well as photos and memorabilia, of their departed loved ones. These celebrations are meant to be happy and reverent instead of spooky or sad because they are, essentially, a celebration of life!

Father’s Day 2018

June 18, 2018 by Nikki No Comments

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Father’s Day weekend, or if this is a holiday you’d rather not think about or celebrate, I hope it was just a pleasant weekend for you. Our weekend was filled with adventure!

On Friday, we went to a free outdoor concert at Durham Central Park with some friends, where the music was amazing and the food from the participating food trucks was decent. Sebastian loves running around with his friends and exploring his environment. He also thinks he’s a big kid so that means he can sit in the adult chairs, right?

Birthday Seafood

May 4, 2018 by Nikki No Comments

A few weeks ago, we got a babysitter and went to dinner for Nick’s birthday. We ate at St. James Seafood Restaurant and Raw Bar in Durham, one of Matt Kelly’s (of Vin Rouge and Mateo’s bar de tapas fame) newest food sensations. Seriously, I love all of his restaurants and would let him cook for me for the rest of my life. Anyway, we went there for my birthday in December and Nick liked it so much that we went back for his. We had just started the Whole30 diet at the time and we were going to try really hard to stick to it, but as soon as we saw the fried oysters, we threw the diet out the window and didn’t feel the least bit bad about it! It was totally worth it.
