Pinspired: Red Lace-Front Sweater and Polka Dot Pixies

As a Christmas gift to each other, Nick and I decided to upgrade our bedroom closet and maximize space as much as possible. We’ve ordered one of those DIY-install closet systems and while we wait for it to arrive, I’ve been trying to reorganize/whittle down my clothes. I realized I haven’t worn this red sweater all winter, and as if she was reading my mind, Laura from I Do DeClaire posted this outfit.

I decided to copy Laura’s outfit and wear this one for Galentine’s Day. If you’re not familiar with this event, then you need to be watching Parks and Recreation1 Seriously, it’s okay, I’ll wait. See, wasn’t that great? 🙂 Two of my friends and I spent the day together, shopping and eating and having a great time. It really was one of the best Galentine’s Day I’ve ever had.

Laura wore knee-high cognac boots with her red sweater and pixie pants, which looked really cute on her. When I tried it with my cognac boots,I felt like I looked a lot shorter than I already am so I ultimately decided to wear my new ankle boots. I haven’t had them long but I’m already in love with them; they’re the most versatile boot I’ve had because they go with everything. EVERYTHING. But wearing them for a day out with the girls probably wasn’t the best idea considering we did a lot of walking and I haven’t really had a chance to break them in yet. Needless to say, they’re broken in now and my feet are only a little sore!

UPDATE: I just realized that this week’s Style Challenge from Audry at Putting Me Together is Wear an Old Piece (aka something you haven’t worn in at least 6 months). Technically, I haven’t worn this sweater since last winter, and not at all this winter – until now – so I think it counts. Therefore, I’m linking up!

Sparkle Sweater Again

Sparkle Sweater Again | NCsquared Life

Oh, look, I’m wearing my sparkle sweater again. Sometimes I’m not really sure about a clothing purchase I make, meaning I have ideas about how I’ll wear it but, in the back of my mind, I worry that it’s far enough out of my comfort zone that I won’t really wear it as often as I plan. I felt that way about this sweater when I first bought it. Don’t get me wrong, I was excited about it and thought it was really cool and looked great, but at the same time, the open back  scared me. However, quite the opposite has happened: it has become my go-to when the whether is cold. I love that I can dress it up or down and wear practically anything under it. This is one of my favorite ways I’ve worn it so far. It’s cool and casual, and edgy. And I like it a lot! I wore this outfit to lunch with Nick and to run errands and to the grocery store.

All You Need is a Light Jacket

January 15, 2015 by Nikki 4 Comments

You guys, I had my eye on this jacket for a while but it was a little more than I was willing to pay, but I recently found it on sale so I did what any girl would do: I snatched it up! I’m still learning how to choose outerwear for my outfits. I started out with a denim jacket but I don’t like wearing it with jeans, and then I finally got a trench coat but I can’t figure out when it’s appropriate to wear (only when it’s raining? can you wear them with jeans? it can’t be too cold out because it doesn’t keep me warm, etc.) but I was convinced that I needed this jacket and now I have it and I’m wearing it with everything! I don’t even care! Also, let’s talk about this sweater. I got it on sale at Target recently and I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be a cropped sweater for an average-size person but I’m so short that I feel like it hits at this awkward point around my belly button. I really like it though, so I’ll make it work.

Sweater and Skirt Combo

December 29, 2014 by Nikki 3 Comments

Sweater and Skirt Combo | NCsquared Life

I originally bought this skirt  with the intention of  wearing it with my white tie-neck blouse to a health conference in September but when I got it home, it felt way too short to wear to a professional event. Looking at it now, I probably would’ve been fine but I’m really loving how good it looks with the tights and booties, especially with the tapered front. And my chunky, slightly oversized sweater makes it feel perfect for winter.

I wore this outfit to date night. We had dinner, with the nicest server ever (seriously, she was so nice and smiled so much and I just loved her), and then came home to watch a movie in the comfort of our own living room. This is what happens as you get older; you prefer watching movies on your couch so you can take snack and potty breaks on your terms. Oh my, I just realized I’m turninng into my parents! 🙂

I think the texture from the sweater and skirt, along with the geometric pattern on the skirt takes this outfit from potentially dull to really interesting.

A Little Fall Preview

September 10, 2014 by Nikki 6 Comments

Fall Preview | NCsquared Life

Like any good college student, as soon as I received my loan reimbursement, I went on a little shipping spree. I stocked up on a few Fall things from Banana Republic, including this chambray top and burgundy box pleat skirt. I imagined wearing this outfit with black tights but it’s still too hot for tights, so this will just have to be a little Fall preview. I’ve been looking for a new chambray because the only one I had previously had polka dots on it, which is cute, but I wanted a plain one. And I love that this skirt has pockets. I’m not sure how I feel about wearing this with ankle boots without tights; it feels like something is off or missing. What do you think? Are there other shoes I could pair this with to make it look better? Or are the boots on point? Internet friends, please help me dress myself! 🙂

I knew I had to have both of these pieces when I tried them on together in the dressing room and they looked so good together. Also, it was such a gray day out when we took these photos that this dressing room photo has better color:
