Guest Posting & Friday Four #3

February 20, 2015 by Nikki 4 Comments

Hey everyone, I’m guest posting over at Work Clothes, I Suppose today while Bri is on her fabulous honeymoon, so be sure to head over there to see what I put together as a potential interview outfit! But since you’re here, I’ll answer this week’s Friday Four, a fun survey I’m doing so that my readers can get to know me a little better.

Guest Posting - Interview Outfit | NCsquared Life

This week’s question is four movies I’ve watched more than once. Basically, these are my four favorite movies!

To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar: Long and strange name, but extremely funny movie! The movie is about three drag queens (played hilariously by Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo) travel cross-country until their car breaks down, leaving them stranded in a small town. It’s funny and heart-warming and has lines that I still quote to this day. My dog, Chico, is a black chihuahua mix and one of my favorite things to say to him is from the movie, “Little Latin boy in drag, why are you crying?” HI-LA-RIOUS!

Where The Heart Is: Young Natalie Portman and a great story. “A pregnant 17-year-old rebuilds her life after being abandoned by her boyfriend at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma” -IMBD. I’ve been meaning to read the book and as soon as have more free time, I will. But I watched the movie in the theater with my best friend and her mom when I was in  middle school. I don’t know what it is about it, but I really love it and every month or so I get a craving to watch it. Good thing I own it on DVD!  “You feel that? That little bom-bom-bom? That’s where the heart is.”

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: “When their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a procedure to have each other erased from their memories. But it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.” – IMDB. In my humble opinion, this is THE BEST love story ever. It reminds you that you that true love persists through all of the bad times and that makes the good times even more worth it. Meet me in Montauk .

Pitch Perfect: I’m a big fan of Anna Camp, Rebel Wilson, and Anna Kendrick. So, when I saw the trailer for Pitch Perfect, I wanted to watch it regardless of whether it was good or bad so I talked Nick into seeing it at the theater with me. As it turned out, WE LOVED IT. Then it came on HBO and we watched it almost every single time it came on. Then we bought it on DVD and made our friends watch it. Turns out, they loved it, too! I bought it for my sister-in-law for her birthday and SHE loved it. My brother (who is VERY critical of movies) really liked it. If you haven’t seen it, you should. It’s worth it to get Pitch Slapped!

What are your favorite movies?

Winterizing a Summer Dress

February 18, 2015 by Nikki 2 Comments

Winterizing a Summer Dress | NCsquared Life

Audrey at Putting Me Together always has great style advice and one that I’ve used on multiple occasions is winterizing a spring or summer dress. As she says, the key is adding layers: tights, boots, and a cardigan. I’ve done a similar look with the tights, boots, and a cardigan before here. It’s really feeling like winter these days in NC so I wore this outfit to class and to work last week. Everyone said I was adorable! I went with my thick, sweater cardigan because this thing is extremely warm, and I would also add that, depending on how cold it is, you might want to add a few extra layers like camisoles or even a slip. I wish I had done that with this dress because it’s very light and airy, which allowed the chilly breeze to make its way through. Brrrr!

Oh, and in case you can’t tell in the photos, my tights are brown.

Pinspired: Red Lace-Front Sweater and Polka Dot Pixies

As a Christmas gift to each other, Nick and I decided to upgrade our bedroom closet and maximize space as much as possible. We’ve ordered one of those DIY-install closet systems and while we wait for it to arrive, I’ve been trying to reorganize/whittle down my clothes. I realized I haven’t worn this red sweater all winter, and as if she was reading my mind, Laura from I Do DeClaire posted this outfit.

I decided to copy Laura’s outfit and wear this one for Galentine’s Day. If you’re not familiar with this event, then you need to be watching Parks and Recreation1 Seriously, it’s okay, I’ll wait. See, wasn’t that great? 🙂 Two of my friends and I spent the day together, shopping and eating and having a great time. It really was one of the best Galentine’s Day I’ve ever had.

Laura wore knee-high cognac boots with her red sweater and pixie pants, which looked really cute on her. When I tried it with my cognac boots,I felt like I looked a lot shorter than I already am so I ultimately decided to wear my new ankle boots. I haven’t had them long but I’m already in love with them; they’re the most versatile boot I’ve had because they go with everything. EVERYTHING. But wearing them for a day out with the girls probably wasn’t the best idea considering we did a lot of walking and I haven’t really had a chance to break them in yet. Needless to say, they’re broken in now and my feet are only a little sore!

UPDATE: I just realized that this week’s Style Challenge from Audry at Putting Me Together is Wear an Old Piece (aka something you haven’t worn in at least 6 months). Technically, I haven’t worn this sweater since last winter, and not at all this winter – until now – so I think it counts. Therefore, I’m linking up!

My Valentine’s Date Surprise & Guess Which Look!

February 16, 2015 by Nikki 7 Comments

My Valentine's Date Surprise | NCsquared Life

Nick and I don’t usually make a big deal out of Valentine’s Day. In fact, our usual tradition is to eat dinner at Chipotle (or somewhere similar) on Valentine’s because it’s less crowded and we’re of the mind that we don’t need Hallmark to sell us a day to show our love. BUT, with me being away at school so much these past two years, Nick decided it would be a nice, romantic date night opportunity.About a month ago, he told me not to make any plans for Valentine’s because he already did. Nick doesn’t plan things like this very often (if ever) so I was pleasantly surprised. He wouldn’t tell me where we were going or what we were doing – except that we were going to dinner but he wouldn’t tell me where – because it was a surprise, but he did tell me I could dress up. So, only knowing that we were having dinner but nothing else, I put together two outfits and told Nick to pick the most appropriate one. I chose a nice blouse and pants for outfit #1 and a really cute dress for outfit #2.

Scroll through to see the outfits in more detail, and at the bottom, you’ll see what we did and which outfit he chose!

Outfit #1: Black and white blouse, black pixie pants, pink heels

The Date

Our date was dinner at Taberna Tapas, a delicious and authentic Spanish restaurant serving small & large plates, including charcuterie and paella, and then a comedy show at the Carolina Theatre featuring Maria Bamford! I had mentioned to Nick as soon as I found out she was playing in our city that I wanted to go see her and he remembered! (And he doesn’t remember ANYTHING!)

And the Winner is…

The dress! Nick said he liked both outfits but this was his favorite of the two, so it’s what I wore.

We had a great time and I’m really glad we celebrated Valentine’s this year. And the best part was, as we were leaving the theatre, it was snowing! It didn’t last long, and it was REALLY cold and windy, but there was something a little magical about it.

Which look is your favorite? Did you celebrate Valentine’s Day?

Friday Four #2

February 13, 2015 by Nikki 3 Comments

As I mentioned last week, I’m participating in a fun survey as a way to let my readers get to know me a little better. Each week I will answer four questions.

IMG_2107

This week’s question is Four jobs I have had. Most of my jobs have been administrative, which is one reason I decided that it was time to graduate school; I was having a hard time moving up. So anyway, here are my last four jobs.

Graduate Assistant: As my current job, I’m a graduate research assistant for one of my favorite professors in my MPH program. This mostly consists of helping my professor with research, literature reviews, data entry, etc. One of my favorite tasks has been going to the state department of public health and reviewing every county’s community health assessment to find out what issues are considered a  priority in each individual county. It was  very interesting to see how each area prioritized health issues like cancer, diabetes, and obesity.

Communications Assistant: For three years I was the administrative assistant for the communications department of an international nonprofit organization that worked for women’s health and rights. It was my most favorite job by far because I learned so much about an area I’m incredibly passionate about.  This is where I had difficulties advancing because I didn’t have an advanced degree so I decided to go to graduate school to get my Master of Public Health so I could continue my career trajectory in women’s health.

Administrative Assistant: Prior to working for a nonprofit, I worked in community mental health. My Bachelor’s degree is in Psychology which is an incredibly broad field. This was something I both loved and hated. I loved it because I could do just about anything. I hate it because I could do just about anything! I decided after undergrad that I would work for a while to get an idea of where I wanted to go next, and that’s how I ended up as the admin assistant for a specialized program working with high-functioning adults with mental illness. It was a great learning experience because I found out that I didn’t want to be a Psychologist/Psychiatrist as I had originally thought.

Health Center Assistant: My very first job out of undergrad was working in a women’s health clinic, checking in/out patients, doing patient work-ups (i.e. blood pressure, height, weight, etc.), and my favorite (yet least utilized) duty was discussing birth control options with patients. I was only at this job for a few months because they asked me to learn how to draw blood and administer shots and I just wasn’t comfortable with that. I didn’t go to nursing school for a reason!

What jobs have you had? Have you ever felt stuck, and what did you do to overcome it?
