Winterizing a Summer Dress

February 18, 2015 by Nikki 2 Comments

Winterizing a Summer Dress | NCsquared Life

Audrey at Putting Me Together always has great style advice and one that I’ve used on multiple occasions is winterizing a spring or summer dress. As she says, the key is adding layers: tights, boots, and a cardigan. I’ve done a similar look with the tights, boots, and a cardigan before here. It’s really feeling like winter these days in NC so I wore this outfit to class and to work last week. Everyone said I was adorable! I went with my thick, sweater cardigan because this thing is extremely warm, and I would also add that, depending on how cold it is, you might want to add a few extra layers like camisoles or even a slip. I wish I had done that with this dress because it’s very light and airy, which allowed the chilly breeze to make its way through. Brrrr!

Oh, and in case you can’t tell in the photos, my tights are brown.

Black and Blue

The weather briefly warmed up a bit and I could wear this cute skirt and thin tights without freezing my tooshie off.  Nick picked out the skirt because he has awesome taste and I know he would want me to let you know that. My favorite thing about it is the bow in the front. When I tuck my shirt into skirts, it sometimes feels too plain, like a belt is needed as a completer piece.  But this bow adds that little something extra and makes the skirt even more cute.

I wore this to have coffee and talk wedding shop with my best friend who is getting married this summer, which is so exciting! Then I wore it to dinner for Nick’s mom’s birthday. I’ve been trying to find more pieces that can be dressed up or down and this skirt is perfect for that.

I love the way the wedge ankle boots look with this outfit, but I decided to change into heels for dinner. The heels are more dressy than the boots, which is what I wanted in a dinner look. I would also wear the heels in the office for a more professional look.

Hello Retro: Take One, Pass It On Challenge

November 15, 2013 by Nikki No Comments

plaid, maroon, tights, and oxfords | NCsquared Life

Today is day four and my last day of participating inSarah’s Real Life Take One, Pass it On Challenge 2.0. At first I was going to “take” the blazer from yesterday’s outfit but I realized I’ve already done that and it would be too easy because I re-wear blazers all the time, so I decided to take the skirt instead. When I paired it with this top, I thought “hello, retro!” and hence the title of this post was born.  To me, monochrome is one of the coolest looks but the hardest for me to put together. This is probably because when I’m shopping, I worry about buying too many items in the same color and ending up with a boring wardrobe.

I know I’ve said I don’t usually like ruffles, but they must be growing on me because I think they make this button-front so cool! That little something extra takes it from boring to fun in no time flat.

To give this outfit a little sparkle, I added my pinterest jackpot sequin blouse. I LOVE the look of this blouse over the plaid button-front.
