Stitch Fix

NCsquared Life
February 4, 2014 by Nikki 1 Comment

It seems that delivery services are all the rage these days. From CSAs (community supported agriculture) that deliver fresh produce to Bark Boxes that deliver doggie goodies, it seems that there is a delivery service for everything now, including clothes. Nick signed up for Trunk Club, a clothing service for men where a stylist picks out clothing and ships it to you to try on at home and then you send back what you don’t want and only pay for what you keep. He’s received about 4 boxes now and it’s been a lot of fun. The anticipation  of what your stylist has chosen for you is one of the best parts. I decided to give it a try with a similar women’s service called Stitch Fix. I’ve seen several fashion bloggers participate so I figured it would be worth a try.

My box arrived on Friday and contained 5 items: three tops, a cardigan, and a pair of jeans.

I tried on everything and pretty much loved it all! I was very skeptical about the fit of most of the clothes, but I noted in my style profile that I have a short torso and often times it’s difficult to find tops that fit well. Two of the tops fit great and two were only a smidge too big, which is about par for the course for me. It was also interesting that everything they sent was some shade of blue (and, of course, the one gray item). I decided to keep two of the tops and the pair of pants (reviewed below).

Under Skies Claremont Printed Stripe Short Sleeve Top – $58

Cute buttons on the back

I love the stripe and paisley patterns on this top, and the color is great. I’m not sure I would have picked it out if I had been shopping for myself because of the loose fit, but I’m looking forward to trying new things that would normally be out of my comfort zone. Like I said, the fit of this top is loose, which is new for me, but I’m excited to start wearing it.

Collective Concepts Valencia V-Neck 3/4 Sleeve Blouse – $68

This blouse is asymmetrical (shorter in the front, longer in the back) which I find is good for us gals with short torsos.

This blouse is very much my taste. I love the cut, the fit, and the color. I would definitely pick this out if I saw it hanging on the rack. It has a flowy fit, which I’ve been wanting to incorporate more of into my wardrobe.

Kensie Jeans Mary-Kate High Rise Skinny Jean – $88

These jeans are super dark, rise high, and are super skinny. I wasn’t sure how I would feel when I pulled them out of the box but as soon as I tried them on, I loved them. I’ve tried the Rockstar skinny jeans from Old Navy and, even though I wear their other jeans, theRockstars looked terrible, which I think is because of their low rise. These high-right jeans are actually really slimming, as they seem to flatten my tummy and hide my love handles. And they’re really comfortable. This might be my favorite item from the whole box!

So, there you have it, my first experience with Stitch Fix. Overall, I was really pleased with the items and the prices aren’t terrible. It’s definitely more expensive than picking up a few tops at Target so I’ll have to limit myself on how many times I order a box, but it was fun and I’d recommend it.

Happy shopping!

Pink and Navy | NCsquared Life

Outfit #3

I kind of felt like Elle Woods in this outfit, with all the pink. But pairing the pink with navy shoes and blazer toned it down a bit and made it feel professional. It works because the two pinks are different enough that it’s monochrome without being too matchy-matchy. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I’m taking some creative liberties with my challenge. The top, skirt, and shoes are in the original 30 pieces list but I added the navy blazer and scarf.

Nick admitted that he didn’t love the scarf with the outfit so I took it off and you could better see the cute sequin detail on the pocket of the sweater. I would have added a nice necklace if I knew I wouldn’t be wearing the scarf. I’ll admit that isn’t one of my favorite outfits that I’ve ever worn, so this might be the first and last time it sees the light of day. You win some, you lose some.

Foundation Pieces

Official outfit #2.

I started the 30 for 30 Challenge because I was feeling a serious lack of creativity and wanted a reason to love the pieces in my closet again – without feeling the constant need to go shopping. The original rule of the challenge is to create 30 outfits using the 30 pieces, but I found that some of the items I chose are rather plain and that some of the outfits needed a little extra umph to make me truly enjoy wearing them. Based on this observation, I’ve decided to use the 30 pieces as “foundation pieces” and go from there. The result: this outfit! The top, pants, and shoes are on the list. When trying to figure out the best way to complete it, however, I felt all the cardigans and blazers in my list were too boring. When I paired with this blazer (which is new and therefore not in the list) I loved the outcome. It’s definitely a winner.

Fall Family Fashion 2013

December 9, 2013 by Nikki No Comments

NCsquared Life

It’s a rainy Monday in my neck of the woods and I’m studying for my last final tomorrow so I won’t be leaving the house all day. What that really means is that I won’t be changing out of my pajamas so I won’t have a nice outfit to share with you today. Instead, I’ll leave you with the outfit I wore for family photos last month. For the last few years, we’ve had beautiful family photos taken by our favorite photographers – who also photographed our wedding and are available if you’re in the market – to put on our holiday cards. They offer an event where you have 10 minutes to take all the photos you can get for a very reasonable and inexpensive price. The photos always turn out gorgeously, as you can see, because Thad and Sarah are artistic geniouses!

As we do for every event in life, Nick and I coordinated our outfits with a pink/navy/brown color scheme. I’m wearing a pink sweater with denim (for my navy) and he’s wearing a pink button-front under a  navy pull-over sweater. Unfortunately, Nick wouldn’t let me dress up the dogs, even though Mia has the cutest little seersucker dress in pink!

These photos could also serve as engagement photos if we weren’t already married so I hope it gives you some good ideas for your own photos!

White Pants

October 8, 2013 by Nikki No Comments

I’m really reluctant to wear white pants for three reasons: 1) I’m afraid I’ll get them dirty and 2) I’m afraid of too much white and 3) I’m also afraid of the sharp contrast of dark and white!

Cardigan, Top, and Jeans: Banana Republic | Flower clip and Shoes: Target

I don’t think that too much white is a bad thing. I also don’t think that dark on white is a bad thing. In fact, I think both looks are very elegant and classy. But, for some reason, I feel like I can’t pull them off. Clearly I can, because this outfit looks really good! I just have to learn to step outside of my comfort zone more often.

How do you feel about white?
