Working Mama & Life Lately

July 30, 2018 by Nikki 2 Comments

Sometimes life hits you hard– even in a good way — and taking it one day at a time is the best way to handle it.

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, then you already know that I started a new job. I’m the Executive Coordinator at a local nonprofit here in Durham that focuses on teen health. I love it. I’d even go so far as to say that this is my dream organization because I’ve honestly been trying to get a job here for half a decade, AT LEAST. And I’m super passionate about the work the organization does and the impact they’re making for teens in my home state of NC.

Life Lately

How long is it supposed to take to find one’s purpose?

I worry that it will take me a lifetime to figure out who I am and what I want to do with it, and by then, it’ll be too late. I’ve always been envious of folks who seem to have it all figured out. Those who have somehow always possessed a sense of who they wanted to be and what path they had to take to be it. Disciplined, ambitious, eager. You must embody those principles to achieve your goals. This is how I would like to describe myself but my mid-twenties seemed to knock those words right out of my vocabulary. I find that life just keeps throwing curve balls and when that happens, you have to widen your stance, maybe choke up on the bat, and stay focused. This is where I am now, trying to stay focused on what my life is and how to drive it to where I want to be.

So, anywhere, here’s an update on my life lately.

When your wind-blown look is on point.

Work work work work work

It’s been four months since I quit my job. I’ve started casually looking for work again since I do have student loans that need to be paid, but if I’m completely honest, I’m not ready to go back. I love staying home with Sebastian and having the freedom to run errands whenever I want to. But I’m taking comfort in the fact that I’m trying to find something more fulfilling, making the transition a little easier.

Sebastian turned one earlier this month. This little dude definitely keeps me busy and I’m loving every minute of it – although I do wish I were better at time management so I could blog a little more. The year has definitely flown by but we’ve had a lot of fun (and stresses) during it.

My heart is doing well

I’m almost a year out from my heart attack (May 27) and I’m feeling pretty good – better than I thought I would be at this point. While I still have some anxiety every now and then, I’ve learned my triggers and how to manage them, and my responses to them. My anxiety mostly manifests itself physically in the form of the heart attack symptoms I experienced last year (basically a mild form of PTSD) and it’s exacerbated when I don’t sleep well for several days and I try to make up for being tired with drinking too much coffee. So I do  my best to get enough sleep and reduce my caffeine intake, and that usually works pretty well.

Spring is finally here.

The beautiful sunshine and warmer breezes have inspired me to take more outfit photos. Getting to wear my cute spring clothes definitely helps, too! See what I mean:

I’m planning to get back to regularly posting outfit photos to don’t forget to follow along. Stick around to find out what else happens in this life of mine.

Life Lately

October 24, 2016 by Nikki 13 Comments

Hi readers!

This is my first post in about six months. My previous posts became sporadic and were unreliable so I decided to take a break to figure out what blogging meant for me while I balanced everything else in my life. I’ve been giving it a lot of thought lately, which prompted me to write this post. I have a lot of ideas (and outfits) for this space, so I think I’m ready to come back. In the meantime, let’s play catch up. I might create fuller, more detailed posts on each event at a later time, but here’s what life has been like in a nutshell for NCsquared.

Travel
-In May, Nick and I attended my friend’s wedding over Memorial Day weekend in Charleston, SC. It was held at the aquarium and was the first time I’d ever been to a wedding in an aquarium, and it was absolutely beautiful.

Hominy Grill in Charleston, SC. Delicious food! I would highly recommend you check it out if you’re ever there.

-In July, we visited my best friend, Karissa, in Los Angeles. I’ve been to see her there once before, but this was the first time Nick and I went together and we had a blast. I met Karissa when I first moved to Durham and she moved to LA about five years ago to pursue her PhD at USC. I miss her like crazy so getting to spend almost a week with her was the best.

The bad news
At the end of August, our beautiful dog and light of our lives, Chico, suddenly passed away from cancer after 10 years of providing us with so much love and happiness. We’re still so heartbroken. I would like to do a memorial post in the future when it gets a little easier to write about him.

The good news
NCsquared is becoming NCcubed (NC3) as I’m currently 18 weeks pregnant! Everyone who has known me for a long time (in real life) was super shocked to find out we’re having a baby… on purpose… because all through our 20s, we had no desire to have children. Things change, though, and life plans get re-evaluated, and one day you may realize that, actually, you do want a little mini-me (or mini-him) running around in your life. And that’s okay. I’m due in March and we are thrilled.

As you can imagine, the last few months have been an emotional rollercoaster for me, but I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of writing about my life. I hope you find it entertaining, educational, and informational! It feels good to be back.

Life Lately

July 10, 2015 by Nikki 4 Comments

Life Lately | NCsquared Life

Hi everyone, I’m still here; I’m just trying to get my life together. I spend most of my days searching for and applying to jobs. Honestly, when I’m at home, it’s difficult for me to get dressed. Not physically, but mentally. Most days I sit at my desk, writing cover letters and tailoring my resume, and I do it all in my pajamas. When you have no job and nowhere to go, it doesn’t really matter what clothes you put on. So, I spend most days in PJs or yoga pants. When I’m not doing that, I’m either babysitting or volunteering.

I’ve noticed the time that I really enjoy getting dressed is when I volunteer. I spend one day a week at a public health organization that I admire and wouldn’t mind becoming a permanent part of someday. On those days, I get to dress in my office clothes.  I even brush my hair and put on makeup, two other things I never do when I’m at home all day!

This has made me realize how my identity as a professional really defines my style. When I was in grad school, I wasn’t quite sure how to dress because everyone was so casual but my warbdrobe consisted mainly of office attire. When I’m at home, unemployed, I feel useless so I don’t even bother getting dressed. But when I’m working (especially in an office setting) I’m in my element and, aside from following whatever dress code they set forth, I dress the part. My closet is full of pencil skirts, trousers, high heels, and cute tops. Since I don’t have an office to wear them to these days, they get tucked in the corner of my closet, along with my self-esteem. I’m sure something will come along eventually, but until then, I’ll just have to admire my clothes that make me feel the most like me from afar.

Here are a few photos that I’ve taken on my phone from my volunteer outfits. I’ll try to get real posts of them up soon but for now, bathroom pics might be the best we’ll get:Life Lately | NCsquared Life

I took some of my babysitting money and went shopping with my friend at the outlet mall (wow, do I sound like I’m 15 years old, or what?). I bought the dress in the above photo from Loft Outlet, which I wore this week to volunteer. I also bought a few pieces that I think will make for good interview attire, if I could ever get one! I also got the casual dress below from Banana Republic Outlet. I plan on wearing it this weekend to a friend’s birthday celebration where we will drink a lot of beer and eat a lot of food from trucks!

Finally, Nick and I are seriously getting our butts back into shape. We’ve started a strength training program together, consisting of a lot of lifting of free weights which makes me feel a little awkward but really empowered at the same time. I have to admit that I love it. It’s my favorite type of work out so far, and I’m getting more comfortable with pushing myself to do more (safely, of course). I took a photo during our last workout, but it’s really blurry because I had just worked my chest and tricepts, so my arms were shaking a bit when I took it. Oops. I’m definitely going to feel that later!

Me, being all badass with the free weights at the gym!

So, that’s been my life lately. I’ve worn a lot of cute outfits that I want to put on the blog, I just have to get it together to take/post pictures. Soon, you guys. I promise!

It’s Hard to Get Dressed When…

May 7, 2015 by Nikki 2 Comments

…you have no where to be. I’ve officially completed my graduate program and am graduating on Saturday. I haven’t had anywhere to be this week, since I finshed my finals on Monday and I don’t have a job, so I’ve been hanging out at home in my pajamas. The next few weeks are going to be filled with job searching and, hopefully, interviewing. I’ve applied for several jobs with a few rejections, one phone interview, but mainly a bunch of silence. I suppose I could get dressed for job hunting, to boost my confidence or something like that, but my pajamas are so much more comfortable!

Until I begin to feel motivated again, I’ll leave you with a few Instagrams of what my life has been the past few weeks.

This is the compelted, bound copy of my thesis. Isn’t it a beauty? 🙂

After my thesis presentation, we took a much-needed break to attend the Walk the Moon show in Greensboro. I’ve been a huge fan of WTM since discovering them almost two years ago, so I was extremly excited to get to see them perform. But I think the best thing about the whole event was getting VIP/Early Entry tickets so we could get in early, have the bar come to us, and have comfy seats while waiting for the show to begin. I will never not be VIP ever again! This is how you do shows in your 30s.

The evening after submitting my very last final, I met some friends for some celebratory drinks. It was such a nice evening!

That’s it for now. I plan to have actual outfit photos up next week. Thanks for hanging in there with me!
