Classy Casual

October 30, 2013 by Nikki No Comments
gray sweater, polka dot chambray, silver loafers | NCsquared Life

Sweater: Banana Republic | Button-front: Old Navy | Pants: Old Navy |Shoes: Rocket Dog via Zappos | Earrings: Target | Necklace: gift

Classy casual is a thing right? Because this outfit feels classy to me, with the polka dots and pearls, but it’s also pretty casual with the lighter denim. Ohh, I like the sound of that; I should change my blog name to polka dots and pearls! Don’t steal that (and if it already exists, just kidding, I won’t steal it either!)

I’m really feeling these loafers because they’re the perfect combination of cute and comfortable. Too often during the colder months I struggle with what shoes to wear because I want to look put together but I also want warm feet. When my feet are cold, my entire body gets cold. These are the perfect solution.

Widows and Wakes

October 29, 2013 by Nikki 1 Comment

As much as we love to travel and try new activities in new locales, we have the most fun in our own city. Finding new events, restaurants, and happenings right here at home is not only cheaper, but builds our sense of community, which is really important since neither of us are originally from here.

This weekend, we attended a very interesting event at the Duke Homestead State Historic Site called Widows and Wakes. The Duke Homestead was the home of one of Durham’s most prosperous tobacco farmers and is now an historic site and tobacco museum.

The event was a special candlelight tour of the home with costumed actors that depicted in the Victorian era “how doctors attended a dying patient and prepared family members to say goodbye, widows grieving their loss at a wake held in the parlor, and the reenactment of a period séance in the dining room.”

It wasn’t the typical Halloween haunted house and that’s what I loved about it. It was curated by a historian that took time to research the traditions of families in the late 1800s so it was an accurate interpretation of how people dealt with death and illness.  The actors contracted “consumption” (now known as tuberculosis), made the last arrangements for their deceased loved one and later contacted them in the afterlife through a spirit guide. Afterward, our group gathered around a roaring fire pit and the curator answered any questions we had regarding what we had seen and life in general in those times. It was very entertaining and I will happily attend next year.

This was our first visit to the homestead and I’m already making plans to visit again for other events to help preserve our town’s history. I definitely recommend looking into what your own town has to offer and making good use of it. You never know what you’ll find and will probably have a blast doing it!

Ruffles and Pearls

October 28, 2013 by Nikki 2 Comments
ruffle sweater, glitter belt, leopard | NCsquared Life

Sweater: Banana Republic | Camisole: Target | Belt: Banana Republic | Jeans: Old Navy | Shoes: Payless (old) | Earrings: Target | Necklace: Francesca’s (the single strand of pearls was a gift) | Bracelet and Watch: gift

There’s nothing like ruffles and pearls to make you feel all girly and feminine. I’m not usually a fan of them, but I like the subtly of the ruffles on this sweater. I feel very pretty in it.

I layered two pearl necklaces to add some bulk to my neckline to contrast the deep plunge of the sweater. It’s all about balance. This bracelet, however, is kind of a problem. I don’t normally wear them because my wrists are freakishly small and most jewelry just slides right off of them (as you can see in the photos). My watch only stays on because I took out every link except one. Is it normal to have such small wrists? I should probably see my doctor about it….

Sunday Morning Serenade

October 27, 2013 by Nikki No Comments

Good morning!

Today’s serenade is “You Make It Real” by James Morrison. It’s mellow, soothing, and is an overall beautiful love song. Enjoy!

The Sunday Morning Serenade series is where I present you with music I think would be perfect for listening to while curled up with a hot cup of coffee on a beautiful Sunday morning.

What Does the Fox Say?

October 25, 2013 by Nikki No Comments
fox sweater, white puffy vest, leopard | NCsquared Life

Sweater: Old Navy | Jeans: Old Navy | Shoes: Payless (old) | Earrings and Necklace: Target | Bracelet: Old Navy | PuffyVest: Old Navy

This adorable fox sweater is popping up all over the place. And for good reason: it’s awesome! It’s light enough to wear when there’s a slight chill in the air, but it’s also perfect for layering. You can probably tell it was windy out when I took these photos, so I added the vest, which is the perfect complement to the ensemble. Personally, think the animal sweater trend is the best thing to happen to clothing. Just sayin’.

This is probably one of my all-time favorite photos of myself. It looks so ominous with the clouds in the background and my skeptical face doubting it all! Photos like this for me are a needle in a haystack.

I’m loving this bracelet because it’s proving to be extremely versatile. At first I thought the color would be too plain and boring but it turned out to be a great neutral piece that I can wear with just about anything. Maybe I should stick to neutrals forever.

By the way, the title of this post is from a song of the same name by a Norwegian comedy duo called Ylvis. A crazy but catchy song that my husband showed me and then several days later all of my classmates were talking about it. It’s weird but funny at the same time.

Have a listen. I promise it’ll be stuck in your head all day. You’re welcome.

How do you feel about the animal sweater trend?
