It’s that time of year again! 2011 is slowly coming to a close. Christmas (for those who celebrate) is this weekend and Hanukkah (for those who celebrate) has just begun. And Kwanzaa (again, for those who celebrate) is next week. Then there’s my personal favorite, the winter solstice! The new year is right around the corner and we’re all probably thinking about our New Year’s Resolution. Okay, maybe not all of us, but I’ve been thinking about mine. Like most people, every year I make a resolution about some big life change that I’m adamant about, like saving money or eating better, and I swear that I’m going to stick to it come hell or high water and then by January 14, it’s already forgotten. But this year, I’ve come up with something pretty good. And it’s so good that I’m actually really excited about it and have plans to start it early.

My New Year’s Resolution for 2012 is to try at least 6 new things. Now, I was going to get all ambitious and say I would try one new thing each month, but in real life, that’s just not going to happen and I don’t want to set myself up for failure from the very beginning. So six new things (as opposed to twelve) gives me the opportunity to try one thing every two months, or more if I can fit them in. I’ve also been thinking in the past few days and have decided to take it one step further. In addition to trying new things this year, I also want to reconnect with some of my old hobbies.  In particular, I want to dance! I  haven’t been salsa dancing in years, almost 4 actually as the last time I can actually remember  salsa dancing was in 2008. So I’m going to find more Latin dancing opportunities and also take an advanced-beginner belly dancing class. About 2 years ago I took an intro belly dancing class and fell in love but I haven’t done anything with it since. So add it to the list in 2012.

As for my new things, I haven’t quite decided what I want to do yet. I do, however, have the first activity planned for next week: I’m taking a pole fitness class where I’ll learn the basic moves for pole dancing! I’m excited and nervous and anxious all at the same time. It’s going to be great. I’d also like to try cooking something really complex instead of the safe and simple recipes I’m used to. So that’s two things right there. Just 4+ more to go!

I plan to blog about each experience so I hope you’ll tune in and see what fun things I come up with during the year. And if you have any suggestions of cool things I should do, please let me know. I’ve lived a sheltered life but I’m breakin’ free, baby! FREE.

What’s your New Year’s Resolution?
